Your home or business houses many of your assets, which is why proper security is important. While there are several methods available, one basic security measure a locksmith can do is install a door lock. Below, Elyria Locksmith Service, Inc., of Elyria, OH, share how the different components of these locks work.

3 Components of a Basic Door Lock

1. The Tumbler Lock

Any kind of secure door hardware on exterior doors will have a tumbler lock. These locks work with a series of spring-loaded pins of different lengths that reside within the tumbler’s cylinder. These pins are stacked with other corresponding pins, and when the key is inserted into the cylinder, the jagged edge will push the pins up to different heights. With the correct key, the break where the two pins meet will be flush with the outer edge of the cylinder. This will allow the cylinder to turn freely, unlocking the door.

2. The Keylocksmith

Your door key is shaped to make locking and unlocking the door easy. The end is pointed to make for easy insertion and the teeth, or cuts, raise the pins to the proper height to unlock the door. Where the cuts end, there is a raised shoulder on the key that provides a stop. This will align the key with the pins. Finally, the end, or bow, makes it easy to grasp and turn.

Because the way keys and tumbler locks work together is so precise, with time and wear, the metal components can wear down, and jamming can occur. Rather than suffering through the fear of not being able to get into your home or business, your local locksmith can easily provide lock repair or replacement.

3. The Knob or Handle

All manual home security hardware makes use of the tumbler lock, but unlike a deadbolt, which inserts a solid bolt into the doorframe to secure the door, a door lock simply prevents the doorknob or handle from turning. This is a great first line of defense for your home, but additional security, like a deadbolt or chain, is always a good idea.
