Your garage door sensor helps you and your loved one stay safe by telling the heavy door to go back up if it detects something is in the way while it’s closing. Because of it’s importance, it’s crucial to make sure it’s working properly. If your doesn’t seem to be, there’s a simple way to test it.

garage doorFirst, grab a ball or a box, and place it underneath the door. You also need to have your door remote. If you do not have one, have someone help by standing next to the wall-mounted opener. Push the button to begin closing the garage door. The sensor should detect the object you placed in its path and signal to the garage door to reverse. If it doesn’t, something’s wrong.

To see if you can troubleshoot the issue yourself, try cleaning the sensor. There should be one on the ground at each end of the garage door. Take a dry cloth, and wipe the glass lens gently, looking for any dust or spots. You can also check if the LED lights are aligned by ensuring neither of them is blinking. If one is, gently move the sensor until the blinking stops. Then, test the door again.

If you have cleaned the sensor and tried aligning it and the garage door continues to fail the test, it is time to call a professional. They will have the tools and knowledge required to safely open up the unit and discover the source of the issue.
