Fractures are rarely serious for children, teens, and young adults. The pliable nature of developing bones—combined with rapid cell turnover—means that even if a child manages to break a bone, their recovery is swift and can be tended to by the family doctor. For adults, however, these injuries are far more complex. Broken bones can take months to heal, requiring extensive physical therapy and rehabilitation. Additionally, an adult fracture is often a sign of a more serious complication.

A Family Doctor Explains the Dangers of Adult Fractures

Why Broken Bones Take So Long to Heal

As a child, a broken wrist or leg takes, on average, just six to eight weeks to heal completely, with little more than a scar to show for it. As an adult, these same fractures can take months to mend, and the bone may feel weak or fragile even after the cast has come off. This stark increase in healing time is usually the result of bone density loss. As we age, poor nutrition, arthritis, and osteoporosis can weaken bones, making them brittle and more prone to breaks.

The Most Dangerous Types of Fractures

Family DoctorBroken wrists, hips, and spinal fractures are among the most common injuries for middle-aged and older adults. These wounds are often the result of a fall or overuse and may be a sign of osteoporosis. The most dangerous of these is a hip fracture, which can increase a person’s risk of death within two years of the injury.

How to Prevent Broken Bones

You should speak to your family doctor or primary care physician about bone health beginning in your 40’s. Your doctor will be able to assess the density of your bones, and offer nutritional recommendations, including taking vitamin D and calcium supplements. They may also recommend strength training at a gym or through a physical therapy program. Strength training has been shown to improve bone density and stave off the more serious effects of osteoarthritis.
