The Advanced Wound Care Team at Coryell Memorial put together a list of “sugar shockers” that we consume daily for Diabetes Awareness Month. The American Heart Association recommends limiting daily sugar to 6 tsp (25 g) for women, 9 tsp (38 g) for men. Yet, the average American consumes 19.5 teaspoons (82 grams) every day. That translates into about 66 pounds of added sugar consumed each year, per person!

Here are five “Sugar Shockers” for you to watch out for during the holiday season:

Cranberry sauce= 5.5 teaspoons of sugar
Kind granola bar-  2.75 teaspoons of sugar
The small box of raisins-  5 teaspoons of sugar
Low-fat strawberry yogurt-  2.5 teaspoons of sugar
1 tablespoon of ketchup = 1 teaspoon of sugar
