Bowling enthusiasts know the rules of the game like the back of their hand. However, even some of the most seasoned bowlers don’t know that there are multiple versions of the game they love. Whether you’re a part of a competitive bowling league at home or simply enjoy the occasional visit to your local bowling alley for a rousing game with family, it pays to learn a bit more about the background of the game.

Below are five different ways that bowlers can enjoy their time on the lanes:

  • 10-Pin: The most common bowling game found in America is the 10-pin game. The ten pins are made of wood or heavy plastic. This tradition dates back as far as 1895.
  • 9-Pin: In 9-pin bowling games, there are no individual scores. The game is played as a team sport, and the pins are set up as a diamond rather than as a triangle. This is a great option for those who are excel in teamwork!
  • bowling5-Pin: 5-pin bowling is largely a Canadian practice. The five pins are placed in a V-shaped formation, and each of the pins is worth a different value, totaling up to 15 points.
  • Candlepin: Candlepin bowling is an old-fashioned take on the sport. The bowling balls are much smaller — only about five inches wide. The pins are long and thin, and during each turn, the player bowls three times in an attempt to knock down as many pins as possible.
  • Duckpin: Combining small, squat pins, lighter weight bowling balls and the multiple-attempt approach of candlepin, duckpin is a challenging game. Those who are looking for a new take on an old game should attempt duckpin, but be wary – the bowling balls have no finger holes, so it’s up to you to ensure accuracy!
