You rely on your heating system to keep your home comfortable all winter long; when it starts blowing cold air, you want to find the source of the problem and get it running right away. The furnace repair experts at Northwind Heat & Air see a few common reasons for this problem in Central Oklahoma homes.

Smart Furnace Repair Strategies for a Furnace Blowing Cold Air

1. Check the Pilot Light

If your unit has a standing pilot see if it is lit.  If not it will need to be manually re-lit. Look at your heating and air conditioning system where the light should be to see if it’s on; if you cannot see the flame, then this is the problem. Relight it or call a furnace repair professional to do it for you.

2. Check the Thermostat

If the thermostat fan is set to “ON,” then the system will constantly blow air, even when the furnace isn’t heating it. This is the cold air blowing out. Set the fan to “AUTO” instead so it will only kick on when air is being heated.

3. Check the Air Filter

Air filters need to be changed more often than most homeowners realize. If this has been neglected, then the furnace will overheat. The result is a system that functions normally until it starts blowing cold air, then it may shut down altogether. This happens as a safety measure to get back to a safe temperature. Allow it to cool down and change the air filter. If this isn’t fixed, it will only continue to overheat, posing a fire hazard and eventually causing very expensive damage to the system.

You should never try furnace repairs on your own at home if you are not an experienced technician.
