A kitchen remodel brings many benefits: It can significantly increase your home’s value and makes cooking more enjoyable. If you don’t plan accordingly for the work, though, you could be at your wits’ end with microwave dinners less than a week in. At Bryan Bell Construction, we recommend our Mountain Home, AR, clients do some or all of the following to eat delicious, healthy dinners throughout the remodel.

5 Ways to Survive Your Kitchen Remodel

1. Create a Temporary Kitchen

Find a space in your home (with a sink, if you can) to set up a temporary kitchen. You may choose your garage, laundry room, or some other area. If it doesn’t have any cabinets or countertop space, ask your building contractor to put some of your old ones in your temporary location. This will give you some much-needed storage and prep space.

2. Use Only the Essentials

A microwave is a must-have during a kitchen remodel. You may also want to consider other kitchen appliances, like a toaster oven or crockpot. These can give you a greater variety of meal options. Make sure you have any cooking utensils you’ll need as well. Pack everything else up, and store it so it’s out of the way. Use paper plates and napkins and plastic silverware to avoid doing more dishes than necessary.

3. Choose Your Remodel Date Wisely

kitchen remodelIf you’re able, do your kitchen remodel during the spring or summer. You can grill burgers, chicken, fish, and all kinds of veggies outside, which will ensure you eat healthy and get fresh air. If you have to remodel in the cooler months, ask a friend to borrow a camping stove or tailgate grill. You can use those in a ventilated area and still enjoy a healthy meal.

4. Plan Ahead

Once you have the dates set for your kitchen remodel, start planning. Cook some large meals in advance that freeze well if you’ll have access to your freezer. You can pop those into a microwave or toaster oven to eat during the remodel. You may also want to save coupons for restaurants and set a little cash aside so you can eat out when you just don’t want to deal with the hassle of cooking in your temporary kitchen.

5. Call a Friend

If all else fails, call a friend, and ask if you can cook them a meal using their kitchen. More than likely, they’ll be happy to have a dinner with friends they didn’t have to cook, and you get to be in a real kitchen. It’s a win-win!
