When you’re buying used tires, it makes sense to learn how to recognize which ones you should buy. Checking the tread depth on the tires is an important first step. Look for tires with at least 6/32 tread to ensure there is enough lifespan to make them worth buying. Additionally, purchase from a reputable auto parts dealer to add an extra level of precaution to the process. Below are several steps to know before you purchase previously driven tires.

Used Tires:  3 Things to Assess Before You Buy

1. Inspect the SidewallUsed Tires

You can easily spot cracking or dry rot by examining the sidewall. If the former driver had repeated run-ins with the curb, you’ll see damage and scrapes on the sidewall. You will be able to see hairline cracks, and the color will be a dull gray instead of black. When this area is damaged, the tire is more likely to break; look for options without these signs.

2. Check the Age

For driving safety, tires that are more than six years old should be avoided. You can figure out the tire’s age by checking the four-digit number located on all tires. The first two numbers will indicate the week the tire was made, and the last two digits will indicate the year. For example: “1213” means it was produced the 12th week of 2013. Never buy a tire without checking the manufacture date, or you could end up with an outdated, corroding model.

3. Look for Patching

Pay close attention to the edges for signs of uneven wear. Inspect the inner sides and outer areas for bubbling or wear conditions that look excessive. If you see patches or uneven wear patterns, the life of the tires has already been compromised, and you’ll be wasting your time buying them.
