Many problems are caused because of misunderstandings — this is true everywhere, even in the trucking industry. Trucking companies often use industry-specific terminology, which their clients don’t always know or perhaps understand to mean something different. To help improve communication between truckers and their customers, Wailuku, HI’s Rojac Trucking explains some commonly used terms below.

5 Industry Terms Explained by Maui Trucking Company

1. Bill of Lading

This document describes the type, weight, and amount of cargo, along with its origin and destination. This always needs to be shared between a shipper and carrier whenever cargo exchanges hands.

2. Container

trucking companyIn the trucking industry, this term refers to a specific type of shipping container, which has standard dimensions and is used to transport freight by land, sea, and air. Containers are manufactured to conform to international or domestic standards.

3. Layover

You may know this term from the airline industry, in which a passenger’s journey is delayed in between segments. Trucking companies use it similarly, to refer to when a driver is delayed for 12 to 24 hours while waiting to pick up or deliver a truckload. This often incurs additional fees.

4. Door-to-Door

Otherwise known as thru trailer service (TTS), this term refers to a shipment in which the cargo stays on the same trailer during an international journey. In other words, the shipper directly brings it to the consignee.

5. Trans-Load

This is the opposite of a door-to-door shipment and refers to the passing of cargo from one carrier to another. This is often necessary for international shipments, as some companies may only operate in certain jurisdictions.
