Dropping your child off at preschool for the first time can be nerve-wracking, so it’s important to make sure you’ve chosen a school you can trust. Research is a vital part of selecting a child care center. When you visit each preschool you’re considering, having a list of questions on hand is highly recommended. Here are four examples of questions you can ask to determine if they’re the right fit for you and your child.

4 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Preschool

1. What are the credentials of the staff?

First and foremost, you need to be sure the teachers and staff are qualified to take care of and teach your child. The school itself should be accredited and licensed, and you can ask about the training background of teachers. Do they have a degree? How long have they worked with children? Are they CPR-certified and trained in first aid?

2. What is the school’s teaching style?

preschoolSchools have different educational philosophies, and the one you choose should match what you believe is right for your child. Some preschools are more teaching-based, while others focus on play. Learning styles can be more or less interactive. Find out the curriculum and how much the center will focus on your child’s development.

3. What’s the student-to-teacher ratio?

The number of students for each staff member can give you an idea of how much individual attention will be given to your child. It’s a good idea to ask if and how age groups are divided as well.

4. How are disciplinary situations handled?

Discipline is tricky, and everyone has their own way of dealing with it. Make sure you’re comfortable with the school’s disciplinary methods, and ask how teachers handle common issues such as biting and hitting. Do they have the children work out their issues? Will parents be notified if a problematic situation occurs?
