Top 5 Driver Safety Tips for Teens, Weymouth Town, Massachusetts

Obtaining a driver’s license as a teenager is an exciting time and one that probably stirs up mixed emotions in parents. If you’re a parent of a teenage driver, sharing these essential driver safety tips will not only help your child stay cautious on the road, but will also help you sleep better at night.

Driver Safety Tips to Share With Your Teen

1. Stay Aware All the Time

Stay aware of your car, other vehicles, and everything else going on around you when driving. Never look at your phone or talk on hands-free devices, as both are forms of distracted driving. It takes a split second for something to change on the road, so always pay attention.

2. Adhere to the Rules of the Road

3. Wear Your Seatbelt & Adjust the Headrest

Always wear your seatbelt and ensure everyone else in the vehicle does the same. Adjust the driver seat headrest so it is behind your head. This reduces whiplash-related injuries in the event of an accident.

4. Pull Over in Bad Weather

Pull over any time you cannot see the road or otherwise feel unsafe in bad weather. Find a parking lot or other well-lit area, and call your parents to let them know where you are.

5. Never Assume

Never assume other drivers know what you are doing or what you intend to do. This is imperative whether you are about to brake, speed up, change lanes, or move out of the way of an animal. If deer or other large animals are on the road, put the flashers on so other drivers know to take extra care.
