During this time of the year, insects and other bugs are seeking out places where they can ride out the winter. For many, this involves digging deep enough into the ground where snow and ice can’t hurt them; however, for others, your home is a better alternative. If you’d like to avoid running into an infestation in the near future, below are a few pest control tips you can implement to protect yourself against uninvited house guests.

3 Pest Control Tips for the Winter

1. Seal All Gaps & Cracks

Ants, roaches, and other insects can make their way into your home through the smallest of openings. To try and minimize these entryways, update all old weatherstripping and caulk around your doors and windows. You should also seal around the gaps where utility lines enter and exit your home, and do a thorough inspection of the walls for any holes or cracks and fill these as well.

2. Remove Food Sources

You can prevent their initial entrance by moving all food in cardboard boxes to plastic or glass air-tight containers, not leaving food out, and keeping your trash covered. If any pests still manage to lodge in your home throughout the winter, these steps will at least help to keep them in an inactive, hibernating state.

3. Relocate Wood & Leaf Piles

Many pests like to create their homes inside wood and leaf piles. After you rake your leaves, bag them up, or at least keep the piles a good 20 feet away from your home. This also goes for wood piles if you rely on firewood. Also, avoid bringing in any wood until you are ready to burn it, as the piece of lumber could have a nest of spiders, ants, or stink bugs living in it.
