If you have a molar or canine that is damaged or causing crowding in your mouth, your dentist may recommend a tooth extraction to take it out. Dr. Imelda C. Tan, DMD, and her team at Zen Dental Hawaii in Honolulu perform extractions for people who have wisdom teeth or need treatment for other reasons. They created this guide to help patients understand why removal may be necessary and how the procedure works.

Tooth Extraction Guide

Before

Tooth ExtractionThe dentist might recommend an extraction if a tooth is ruined from damage or infection. You may also have a crowded mouth or incoming wisdom teeth. After you and your doctor agree to removal, they will review your medical history and take X-rays.

Once they examine the photos, they can create a plan for the procedure based on the location of your tooth and how it is shaped. On the day of your appointment, your dentist will review the treatment plan with you and ensure you are comfortable in the chair. Next, they will administer a local anesthesia, so your gums and tooth are numb.

During

Once you are sufficiently numb, your practitioner will loosen your tooth with a dental elevator. This tool acts as a lever to make removal easier. Next, they use extraction forceps to take the tooth out. In some cases, they will also smooth the bone underneath. Some treatments require a closure of the area with a stitch.

After

When the procedure is over, the dentist will ask you to bite down on a piece of gauze and keep it there for a while. You will still be numb for a few hours, so it is essential to be careful until the anesthesia wears off. They will instruct you not to clean the teeth around the extraction site or rinse your mouth for 24 hours. If you smoke, avoid cigarettes for a day or two. Refrain from using straws, which can keep blood from clotting which is necessary to heal the area.

It is common to feel discomfort for a few days after the appointment. It is recommended you take an over-the-counter pain reliever or apply an ice pack. You may also avoid hot or cold foods and beverages since your mouth will be sensitive. If you have questions about aftercare or you develop a fever, call your dental office.
