An endodontist is a dentist with specialized training in saving and repairing teeth. They typically see patients who have suffered some type of dental trauma, or in other words, significant damage that threatens the integrity of the teeth and their prospects for salvage. The endodontists at Grassi & Grassi, PC, in Rochester, New York, treat a variety of dental trauma injuries, and below they discuss three of the most common ones in greater detail.

3 Dental Trauma Injuries an Endodontist Can Treat

1. A Chipped Toothendodontist

Chipped teeth are the most prevalent type of dental injury endodontists treat. A chipped tooth may not, on the surface, sound like a big deal; however, it's important to remember a chip can be quite deep and expose the pulp of the tooth. Also, a break, crack, or split in a tooth can extend into the root. In any of these scenarios, an endodontist would likely need to perform a root canal to remedy the issue.

2. A Tooth That Has Been Knocked Out

There are several accidents that could cause a tooth to be knocked out, or, in clinical terms, avulsed. If you have lost an entire tooth, gingerly pick it up by the crown, being careful to avoid the root at all costs. Keep the tooth moist, and see an endodontist as soon as possible, as this will offer the best chances of saving and reattaching the tooth. Your endodontist will usually reinforce the tooth with a splint.

3. A Dislodged Tooth

An endodontist can also help if one of your teeth gets lodged further into its socket. This is actually a very serious injury in which steps need to be taken to try and salvage the tooth. The tooth will be stabilized, and a root canal may be necessary, though stabilization is the main priority in the immediate aftermath of a dislodged tooth; a root canal can be performed at some point in the near future.
