With vehicles ranging in size from compact electric cars to massive semi-trucks, it makes sense that there need to be different types of tow trucks to accommodate. It’s not just size that needs to be taken into account, either, but also the situation in which a vehicle is towed, its weight, and whether it features front, back, or all-wheel drive. Some of the most widely-used tow trucks include the following.

3 Types of Tow Truck You May Rely On After an Accident

1. Hook & Chain Trucks

These trucks hoist vehicles up from one end and pull them along on their own wheels. While mostly versatile, they have some limitations: For example, they can’t drag vehicles locked with parking brakes, nor can they safely transport all-wheel vehicles. These trucks can also damage bumpers, so they’re mainly used for wrecked or junk cars.

2. Flatbed Tow Trucks

Flatbed towing vehicles can safely transport vehicles with limited risk of damaging them, and are ideal for responding to most roadside emergencies.

3. Wheel-Lift Tow Trucks

Hook and chain trucks are not suitable for every situation because of their potential to damage certain vehicles. Wheel-lift trucks work similarly to these, except they use pneumatic hoists to suspend one side of a vehicle in the air. For most vehicles, this is much safer than the hook and chain setup.
