If the majority of your workday is spent gazing at a computer screen, you are at high risk for developing Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)—a condition with symptoms ranging from dry eye and eye twitching to headaches and fatigue. While eye exercises and ibuprofen can alleviate these ailments temporarily, the following eye care tips from Daniel J. Kroger OD will help prevent the condition altogether.

5 Optometrist-Approved Ways to Prevent Computer Eye Strain

Tweak Your Monitor Position

Adjusting the position of your monitor is a simple and effective way to combat CVS. Keep your monitor at least 20 inches from your eyes and the top of your screen at eye level to maximize comfort and avoid unnecessary strain from constantly looking up at your work.

Adjust Your Lighting

Excess amounts of natural or artificial light can create a glare, which will tire your eyes. Position your monitor to prevent backlighting and swap harsh overhead fluorescent lights for floor or desk lamps to maximize comfort.

20-20-20

The 20-20-20 rule is a quick and easy way to keep your eyes fresh. Simply take a 20-second break every 20 minutes to stare at an object 20 feet away from you. This will give your eyes a breather from constant near focusing, your monitor’s backlight, as well as allow you to reorganize your thoughts.

Keep Your Monitor Bright

The brighter your monitor is, the lower the flicker rate. The lower the flicker rate, the lower the likelihood of headaches and eyestrain. This will also provide a greater focal range and allow you to work for longer periods without discomfort.

Schedule an Eye Exam

This will afford you the opportunity to discuss any concerns with your eye doctor and receive a clean bill of health.
