In some states, dissolution of marriage is a term interchangeable with divorce; they are essentially the same. Ohio, however, recognizes some differences between the two, though both achieve the same goal of effectively ending a union. Generally speaking, a dissolution is a no-contest divorce wherein the spouses agree on the terms before, during, and after it is finalized. In a traditional divorce, there must be sufficient grounds to seek an end to the union; dissolution does not have this same requirement.

While a dissolution of marriage is almost always a more amicable way to terminate a relationship, the process still needs the guidance of a knowledgeable family lawyer. You and your spouse may choose to have different lawyers, or you may elect to have the same attorney. Your legal representative(s) will work with both you and your spouse to come up with all the plans and arrangements necessary for a dissolution, and you complete these tasks without the interference of the courts. In fact, the courts are not even involved at this point.

dissolutionYou and your spouse will make determinations as to child custody, alimony and child support, division of property and assets, and more. These determinations will require considerable negotiation and compromise, and the process will be overseen by your lawyer(s). Once these plans have been drawn up, a dissolution petition is filed with the courts. When it is approved, you and your spouse are legally divorced.
