The Northeast is right in the midst of fall, meaning you’re likely using your leaf blower regularly or perhaps even daily. However, like any other outdoor power tool, there’s maintenance involved to keep it functioning at a high level. Thankfully, the tasks required to keep it in good condition aren't too complicated.

5 Essential Leaf Blower Maintenance Tasks

1. Examine the Exterior Before Each Use

An important part of leaf blower maintenance is constant observation. Before you even turn it on, take the time to thoroughly inspect it. Check the exterior housing for any cracks and the collection bag for any holes or a broken zipper.

2. Check the Components

blowerDuring your routine inspection, confirm that the throttle lock, trigger, and stop switch are fully functional. Also, tighten any loose screws or nuts.

3. Keep Things Clean

Clean your leaf blower at least once a week, especially if you use it frequently. Remove debris from the air intake and clean up the flywheel’s fan blades, carburetor space, and the spark arrestor screen on the muffler.

4. Make Replacements ASAP

As you inspect and clean your leaf blower, you may discover parts like the air filter, spark arrestor screen, fuel line, and fuel filter require replacements. Purchase and install new components as soon as you notice any issues; don’t wait until the situation worsens, as it could cause more extensive damage to your equipment.

5. Flush Out the Fuel

Finally, every month, drain any old fuel and flush it out. When you refill the tank, always use new gasoline and include a bit of fuel stabilizer to prevent corrosion, freezing, and rust.
