A lot of dog owners know just how important pet dental care is. However, brushing a dog’s teeth at home is far from easy. The veterinarians at Troy & Wentzville Veterinary Clinic in Missouri recommend using these tips while brushing your dog’s teeth on a regular basis. Consider these recommendations to help keep your dog’s teeth clean and healthy without all of the hassle.

5 Tips for Pet Dental Care at Home

1. Use the Right Tools

Using a toothbrush specially designed for dogs is recommended; however, there are other options. A child-sized toothbrush can be used as well, a finger brush, and even a piece of gauze.

2. Use Dog-Specific Toothpaste

Toothpaste made for humans are unhealthy for dogs and can be dangerous if swallowed. It’s for this reason that it’s important to only use toothpaste that’s safe for dogs. They’re also usually meat-flavored, making your dog more willing to let you clean their teeth. Give them a small taste of it when being used for the first time to get them interested in having more.

3. Start Early

4. Be Gentle

Brush in small, gentle circular motions focusing on the outside surface of the teeth, as most dogs won’t allow you to brush the inside surface of their teeth. Be sure to lift your dog’s lip, exposing the outer surface of their teeth while brushing. Don’t forget to focus on the upper back molars, as these teeth tend to build up tartar quickly.

5. Reward Your Dog

Pet dental care can sometimes cause your dog stress or anxiety, so it’s important to reward them upon completion. You can do this with play time, petting, time outside, or any activity you believe would help positively reinforce the process.

Aside from brushing your dog’s teeth regularly, it’s also important to take them to a vet for a routine cleaning.
