How Often Do Septic Systems Have to Be Inspected?, Lemon, Ohio

Septic systems are an essential part of every home. A typical setup has four main components: the pipes, septic tank, drain field, and soil. The main function of this system is to handle all of the wastewater you discard through your drains to ensure that it doesn’t contaminate your water supply. Learn how often you need to have your septic system checked below.

The Septic System

Wastewater from your home goes down from your drains through the pipes and into the septic tank, it is stored temporarily. Bacteria inside the septic tank breaks down the waste, separating scum, which flows to the top; sludge, which settles at the bottom; and processed wastewater, which flows to the drain field and gets spread to the surrounding soil. Over time, the scum and sludge build up, making the system less efficient at discarding wastewater. This buildup can block your pipes, causing your drains to back up or wastewater to overflow and spread to your lawn and other parts of your property.

When to Have Your Septic System Inspected

Some states have legislation mandating the inspection of septic systems within a certain time frame. However, other factors may affect the septic systemsfrequency with which you need to have it inspected. These include your average water consumption, the size of your household, and the capacity of the septic tank. For instance, homes with six to 12 members should have their septic systems inspected and pumped every two to three years.
