Reorganizing your room is a fun way to refresh its look. However, a common moving casualty is the health of your wood floors, as dragging furniture and other items can often leave deep scratches on the surface. To keep this from happening, follow these moving tips to help your hardwood flooring maintain its pristine look.

How to Avoid Damaging Your Floors

1. Keep Your Floor Clean

If there are grit from sand or dust and debris buildup on your floor, sliding heavy furniture over it can cause scrapes. Sweep or vacuum your hardwood flooring before a move to make sure the area is clean.

2. Don’t Drag Your Furniture

Dragging furniture is sure to carve deep scratches into your wood floors. When lifting isn’t an option, place some cushioning, such as felt pads or a towel, under the corners of your furniture to prevent damage.

3. Make It Lighter

4. Take Your Time

Pushing too hard on a heavy object can make a scratch deepen, and moving too fast can send your furniture off its protective padding. Take your time relocating your heavy items, and take a break if you feel your strength wavering.

5. Be Careful With Wheels

It can be tempting to use dollies to move some items, but wheels are just as likely to cause scratches as the furniture itself. Hard rubber wheels are likely to leave marks on hardwood flooring. Choose a dolly with inflatable wheels if you must use one.
