With over 50 years of experience as Cincinnati’s top transmission maintenance specialists, the mechanics at Mr. Transmission are incredibly well-versed in this vital component of the automobile. As the part that converts the energy from the engine to the wheels, the transmission is what controls the speed of the wheels' turning as well as the torque.

How exactly does it do this? What comprises the transmission? Modern transmissions are made up of four major parts, and each has a very important job:

  • Planetary Gear Sets: The gears of a car determine how much energy goes from the engine to the wheels, and in an automatic transmission, these gears are arranged in a circular pattern. Basically, a central gear is set into a larger “ring” gear, and remains motionless while smaller ones surround it and engage with it to ensure smooth motion. That ring gear is what is actually connected to the output from the engine, and the smaller, non-central gears connect to the clutch pack as well as the drive train, which spins the wheels.
  • The Hydraulic System: The entire transmission is submerged in fluid which ensures smooth, lubricated motion, and allows for gear shifting while also cooling the entire system. The hydraulic system regulates these procedures, and ensures that the right kind of pressure is placed on the clutch pack.
  • Torque Converter: Whereas a manual driver has to engage the clutch or go into neutral when the car stops (otherwise the engine will stall), automatic transmissions have a torque converter to allow everything to keep running and stay in gear. It uses the pressure of the transmission fluid to control its motion and perform its function.
  • Computer: Most modern cars have a computer that regulates the activity of the transmission, employing a system of 30 or so sensors to coordinate the activity of the whole.

To be sure, these are incredibly complex parts, but rest assured that no one in Southern Ohio is more qualified to provide transmission services than the mechanics at Mr. Transmission in Cincinnati.
