Lawns throughout Hawaii feature warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine. They’re mostly saline-tolerant thanks to irrigation with brackish water and the salt spray many areas use. If you are new to the Hawaiian Islands and want to ensure your grass always looks green and beautiful, here are a few essential tips.

How to Keep Your Grass Healthy

1. Choose the Correct Mowing Height to Reduce Thatch

Adjust your mower based on your grass type, especially if it is a turf prone to thatch. The recommended mowing height for Bermuda grass, for example, is between 1/2 to 2 inches; however, some hybrids, such as Tifgreen and Champion, can be cut to 1/8 of an inch. The recommended height for most Zoysia species is between 3/4 to 2 inches. If you are mowing turf at a height of less than 1 inch, use a reel mower. Mowing heights greater than 1 inch do well with rotary mowers.

2. Research Fertilizer Options for Your Grass Type

grassFertilize your yard in the spring and summer for best results. Applying fertilizer in the winter is not recommended, as your Hawaiian lawn grows at a slower rate and does not need the additional nutrients. Common Bermuda grasses benefit from two to three pounds of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer every 60 to 90 days, while other varieties, such as Seashore Paspalum, require the same nitrogen application cycle in a smaller dose.

If your turf was planted recently, you should wait to fertilize it, but this again is based on the species. St. Augustine, for example, shows little root development in the first month and does not need fertilizer until it is established.

3. Water on a Weekly Basis

Water your turf every week, as the grass species in Hawaii are drought-tolerant and do not require daily hydration. Weekly watering is usually more than enough to keep your grass green. Give your turf a dose of the vital liquid in the morning so it doesn’t evaporate too quickly. Early morning waterings are also recommended because disease development is minimal and the wind is not as likely to create different distribution patterns. Evening watering is discouraged since it promotes fungal growth.
