What Is the Process of Becoming a Real Estate Agent?, Brooklyn, New York

A career as a real estate agent is desirable for many reasons: The opportunity to be your own boss, helping other people meet their goals, and unlimited earning potential are just a few perks of the job. No matter your purpose, the process of becoming an agent is quite simple with the right preparation and support. If you’re ready to start your career in New York, follow the three steps below.

How to Become a Real Estate Agent

1. Take a Pre-Licensing Course

All new real estate agents must take pre-licensing training from a certified organization before they approach the exam. Select your institution and course type depending on how you learn best, whether online or on campus. In New York, you are required to take 75 hours of classes.

2. Take the Licensing Exam

The New York multiple choice test has 75 questions, and you must complete it in 90 minutes with a passing grade of 70%. If you don’t succeed on your first attempt, take it as many times as you need to get an adequate score. The questions are based on the course curriculum, so study the material.

3. Select a Broker & Apply

After passing the test, apply to become a real estate agent. You will need to find a sponsoring brokerage to hang your license under. Discuss the terms of your employment agreement and choose a broker who provides the environment, financial perks, and support you need to grow and advance in the industry.
