New to Dentures? Get Acclimated in No Time With These Extremely Helpful Tips February 24, 2015

New to Dentures? Get Acclimated in No Time With These Extremely Helpful Tips, ,

Dentures make up for teeth that were lost due to disease or injury. Getting used to wearing dentures is a process that takes a bit of time, and dealing with slight discomfort during this period is very common. If you were recently outfitted for dentures, then check out a few tips concerning the acclimation period courtesy of You Should Smile Dental in Bloomfield, NJ:

  • Speaking: Dentures sometimes interfere with speech because they can slip, so wearers must learn to gently bite down and swallow before speaking and eating. Reading aloud is recommended, as it shortens the time it takes to re-learn normal speech patterns and to pronounce words correctly.
  • Eating: Eating is another frequent issue for new denture wearers, so a soft food diet is best to avoid excessive pain. Food cut into small pieces also helps, as does chewing with both sides of the mouth and up and down rather than side to side.
  • Soreness: Warm salt water gargles and mild pain relievers often help to alleviate sore spots that develop for many new denture wearers. Taking the dentures out at night so tissues may breathe and heal is recommended as well.
  • Cleaning: Dentures must be cleaned daily using a denture brush and cleanser. This removes plaque buildup and ensures that the dentures smell fresh. Aggressive brushing is discouraged, as it can damage dentures. Additionally, they must be stored in water or denture cleanser when not in use, as this prevents drying out and warping issues.

Keep in mind that increased saliva flow is normal when getting used to dentures, and will eventually subside—though taking dentures out at night is again suggested. Dentists also recommend brushing the tongue, gums, and natural teeth following denture removal to maintain overall dental health.
