Nursing is a gratifying career choice that offers the chance for longevity and advancement. The first step for many is often becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), which can be achieved by passing a certification test. Examinations involve both a written and a practical component, so it’s best to seek out training that encompasses both theory and hands-on practice.

The next career move for many CNAs is to go back to college to become a Registered Nurse (RN). Many CNAs find it possible to work as they study towards their RN degree, which helps alleviate financial costs as well as provides valuable real-world experience.

RNs are required, at a minimum, to obtain an associate degree in nursing to become an RN. These ladder programs normally take anywhere from one to one and a half years to complete, depending on your chosen program and class load. After completing your required credit hours, you will be required to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). It’s recommended that you allot three to six months to prepare for this exam.

Once you have received your associate’s degree and passed your examination, you will officially be an RN. To continue your education and better your career prospects, you can keep going back to school to earn advanced degrees. Many RNs choose to go back to school to complete their bachelor’s degree, followed by a master’s and doctorate.
