Garage doors are an important aspect of your home’s safety, so you naturally don’t want to experience an accident. Not only would it be a visual blemish on your home’s exterior, it would put your car, family, and home at risk for potential safety hazards. Luckily, accidents can be prevented. Serving the Alabama tri-state area for more than a quarter of a century, MP Garage Doors would like to give you some tips to help prevent accidents.

Tips for Preventing Accidents

Check System Regularly

A lot of garage door accidents happen because of a faulty part, from dead batteries in the remote to a broken spring in the door mechanisms. Make it a habit to do a monthly check to ensure everything is working properly. Hiring a professional garage door expert to provide maintenance is recommended as an expert is much better at detecting – and correcting – potentially dangerous issues.

Keep It Clear

dothan-garage-doorsMost of us use our garages for more than just our cars, which means its easy for something to obstruct the door’s path—including people. Make sure your family knows that it should be clear of toys, bikes, and people so the door can close without an issue.

Check the Reverse

Your garage door should be able to do an automatic reverse. This is important to prevent accidents if someone is under the door as its closing. To do this, place a 2 x 4 under the door and then attempt to close it normally. If the reverse works, it should automatically reverse its position, opening again to allow you to remove the board. Checking regularly that the reverse automatic opener works is important so you can avert a situation where the door is unable to be lifted and someone ends up hurt.

Place Buttons Intentionally

You want to make sure your kids can’t reach the buttons to open the garage door, so it’s important to put them where they can’t reach them. Place them approximately five feet from the ground, ensuring your kids can’t accidentally open it – or close it.
