We've all had moments of frustration or anger when someone cuts us off in traffic or creeps along in the freeway fast lane. But, road rage is a serious problem with serious consequences; in fact, 66% of auto accident deaths are caused by "aggressive driving"—in other words, road rage. To help you tackle your own issues with it, or to know how to safely address it in other drivers on the road, below are three things to know about road rage and auto accidents.

3 Things to Know About Road Rage & Auto Accidents

1. You Shouldn't Try to Engage an Enraged Driver

If you encounter a driver who is in the throes of road rage, don't engage them in any way. Whether or not you did something wrong, don't try to interact with someone who is not behaving rationally and in accordance with the rules of good, civilized driving. Don't scream back, don't lay on the horn, and don't try to apologize; don't even make eye contact.

2. Beware of How Quickly Road Rage Can Escalate

auto accidentIn some road rage experiences, angered drivers will not be able to let go of the issue and may become predatory. An average automobile can easily be transformed into a 4,000-lb. weapon. On top of this fact, many road rage incidents involve guns as well. A moment of road rage can escalate with alarming speed and violence into something much darker; stay aware at all times, and call for help if necessary.

3. Learn Stress Reduction Techniques

Some people are just naturally prone to outbursts of anger or outsized emotional flare-ups. Getting behind the wheel can only exacerbate these tendencies. If you are one of these people, be proactive in your own health and betterment. Learn stress reduction and relaxation techniques, listen to calming music when you're in your car, and leave yourself enough time to get where you need to go.
