Frozen pipes can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. Because water expands as it freezes, allowing pipes to reach below-freezing temperatures can create serious issues like blockages and bursts. Pressure from expanding water can cause even the strongest and most durable pipes to break. Thankfully, there are a few general plumbing tips you can follow to prevent pipe freezing altogether.

3 General Plumbing Tips to Prevent Pipe Freezing

1. Turn Off Sprinklers

Inside most homes, pipes are generally well-insulated enough to avoid freezing. However, exterior pipes are still vulnerable and can become frozen more easily than those located inside your home. It’s thus a good idea to keep your irrigation system turned off for the winter, and you should also drain the system entirely. First, turn off the system’s release valve, then expel any residual water by using compressed air.

2. Shut Off Outside Faucet

If your home has a different shut-off valve specifically for your outdoor water supply, make sure it’s closed. Keep it turned off long before your first frost approaches to be completely safe. Drain the water from any exterior faucets as well prior to shutting it off for the winter. Be sure to fully drain and disconnect any garden hoses, too.

3. Wrap Interior Pipes

Wrap pipes in heat tape to retain warmth, and make sure your home’s skirting is structurally sound to avoid any exposure to extreme chills. Keep doors open to increase circulation throughout your home, and if needed, consider using space heaters under appropriate supervision to prevent particularly at-risk pipes from freezing.
