Touch, sight, sound, and taste are all commonly known examples of a sensory experience.  There are lesser known sensory systems that are important factors in a child’s regulation ability.  Proprioception refers to the body’s sense of where it is in space, particularly in relation to itself and other objects.  This is also known as body awareness.  Our vestibular system helps us process movement information and relates to our ability to balance as we move through space.

Sensory integration refers to the brain organizing and interpreting the sensory information it receives.  Sensory processing and integration is supposed to occur naturally throughout the early stages of childhood and beyond. However, some kids may struggle with the processing and integration of sensory input.  This struggle often results in unexpected and undesirable behavioral challenges, language delays and motor in-coordination.  Therapy focused on sensory integration is one of the many treatment approaches used to address these challenges. All For Kids Pediatric Therapy Cliniclocated in Anchorage, AK, provides a wide range of programs to treat children with language and motor skill disorders, as well as the behavioral challenges that may accompany sensory processing difficulties. Below is an explanation of this approach for enhancing sensory processing.

What Happens During Sessions?

First, the occupational therapist will evaluate the child to determine his or her individual sensory profile. This allows the therapist to tailor a therapy plan with activities matched specifically to the child’s preferences and challenges. Treatment may take place in a sensory gym or a place with specialized equipment made specifically for this treatment. Equipment can include chewable jewelry, weighted vests, headphones, or squeeze machines, which are all designed to offer input to various senses.  The therapist will also provide parents and children with ideas on how they can carry over therapy activities at home.  Therapy sessions are often very fun and play-based, but at times are challenging and less exciting.  A wide range of options are available for working through sensory processing and integration challenges.

If your child has a sensory processing disorder or you suspect that they may have challenges with processing sensory information that is impacting their behavior or social skills, you might consider scheduling an occupational therapy evaluation.  Contact the team at All For Kids Pediatric Therapy Clinic in Anchorage, AK today by calling (907) 345-0050.
