Your septic system is an amazing innovation that quietly and efficiently treats household waste with very little maintenance. As reliable as these systems are, however, they do require regular maintenance for optimum functioning and to avoid unnecessary septic tank repairs. With the following steps, your septic tank will work for at least 20 years.

4 Crucial Steps for Maintaining Your Septic Tank

1. Watch What You Flush

If you have a septic tank, avoid flushing sanitary napkins, paper towels, or anything besides toilet paper. Keep food grease and fat out of your sink, and never put eggshells or coffee grounds down the drain, either. The less you put into the tank, the more efficiently it will work.

2. Get It Pumped Regularly

The bacteria in the septic tank will break down most solid waste, but some of the sludge at the bottom will need to be removed regularly. While the pumping schedule depends on your budget and size of the household, most will need to be emptied every three to five years.

3. Manage Your Landscaping

Keep the area above the septic tank clear – trees should be at least 10’ from the tank. And take the necessary steps to keep water runoff from accumulating near the tank. If the soil becomes too saturated, the leach field could be permanently damaged.

4. Schedule Regular Inspections

Every year, have the system checked by a professional, who will ensure everything is working as it should. If you do need septic tank repairs, they will take care of the issue before major problems develop.
