If you have a cavity, your dentist will need to fill it to prevent further decay. There are a number of popular filling materials used in dental practices today, from cast gold to ceramic. Often, a dental office will provide several options for patients to choose from. If you have an appointment for a filling coming up, you may want to consider key features of each material, so you can decide which one works best for your needs.

Filling Materials Commonly Used by Dentists

Amalgam

Amalgam is a metal mixture that typically consists of silver, zinc, tin, copper, and mercury. Mercury makes up about half of the material. Amalgam is a popular filling option, as it’s robust, inexpensive, and lasts at least 10 years.

Composite Resin

Composite resin is made of a dentistmix of fine glass particles and plastic. Since the material is clear, unlike amalgam, the filling will seamlessly match the tooth’s color. They will also need to be replaced after about five years.

Cast Gold

This material consists of gold mixed with other metals. Due to gold’s extreme durability, these fillings can last upwards of 15 or 20 years. Gold is also resistant to corrosion. However, they are the most costly option.

Ceramics

Ceramic fillings are typically made from porcelain. They are made to perfectly match the color and texture of the existing tooth, lending a natural appearance. Compared to composite resin, ceramic material is resistant to stains and abrasion. On average, ceramic fillings last about seven years.
