When your dentist says you have a cavity, you know your next step is a filling. A dental filling is when material is inserted into part of a tooth destroyed by decay. It restores the tooth to its normal function and shape, and thanks to advanced dental technology, the procedure is fast and relatively painless. With that reassurance in mind, here’s your basic guide on what to expect.

A Dentist’s Guide to Fillings

Different Options

The first thing your dentist will discuss is what kind of filling you want. There are four different materials to choose from — gold, amalgam, composite, and glass ionomers. The most common type is amalgam. These are the silver-colored fillings that are strong and inexpensive. If you’d rather the filling blend in with your tooth, ask about the tooth-colored composite fillings. Gold fillings are long-lasting but cost more, and glass ionomers are usually used for baby teeth.

The Procedure

fillingThe first step in the procedure is local anesthesia. Your dentist will numb the area around the tooth so you don’t feel anything. They’ll then use either a special drill or an abrasion instrument to remove the decayed part of the tooth. They’ll clean out the area and place the filling in the empty space. To wrap up, they’ll clean and polish the tooth.

After the Appointment

It’s common for your lips and gums to feel numb for several hours after the procedure. This can make chewing difficult, and it’s recommended to avoid chewing with the side of your mouth where the filling is for the rest of the day. You might feel sensitivity to hot and cold substances for up to a week afterward. If the issue continues or you feel pain, see your dentist.

Cavities are common, and treating them is a routine procedure with nothing to worry about. The best way to prevent them is to commit to twice daily brushing and flossing.
