Are Traditional Braces a Better Solution Than Invisalign®? October 27, 2017

Are Traditional Braces a Better Solution Than Invisalign®?, Richmond, Kentucky

Braces are essential for correcting poor teeth alignment, and when used properly, they will also help fix bite issues and lead to a much-improved smile. With two prominent choices available in the form of metal braces and Invisalign®, however, the decision-making process becomes a little trickier. Are traditional braces better than Invisalign, or do they both get the job done in their own unique way?

Comparing Traditional Braces & Invisalign

Braces

While some may consider the permanence of metal braces to be a con, it's one of the key reasons they work so well. Since you'll have them in place 24 hours a day for an average of two years, there's no temptation to remove them and you won't have to worry about leaving them at home. There are also no additional steps in the cleaning process other than brushing, flossing, and the optional use of a water pick.

Cons include occasional moments of discomfort, as well as the potential for pain and sores. Braces also make it more difficult to eat certain foods, and playing rough contact sports is a no-go.

Invisalign

invisalignThe main selling points of Invisalign are ease of use and, of course, the fact that they're clear. Since they're removable, you don't have to worry about difficulty with eating, and the only discomfort comes with the gradual moving of teeth. Your dentist will have you change to a new aligner tray periodically, and you may need a retainer once treatment is over.

Other than the aforementioned discomfort, the chief cons include the need to constantly remove and clean trays, making a travel teeth cleaning kit absolutely necessary. You need to stay on top of your Invisalign use, too, because neglecting to wear it will set the entire process back significantly.

Deciding Factor

Now that the advantages of both are clear, where does that leave us? It's all going to come down to the type of corrective situation you're dealing with. Invisalign is a fantastic solution for corrective measures that aren't terribly complicated, and the fact that they're removable makes them a particularly attractive option. For complex cases, however, you're better off going with traditional braces. They tend to move misaligned teeth at a faster rate, and they're more effective at clearing up abnormal bites and correcting malocclusion.
