A tooth crown is a popular solution for restoring the shape, size, and function of a damaged tooth. It’s like a sort of “cap,” which is fitted over the damaged tooth. Crowns can protect weak teeth—for instance, if decay damages them—and restore broken or worn-down teeth. They can also be used for aesthetic purposes, to address a misshapen, discolored, or uneven smile.

Getting tooth crowns is usually a two-step process. First, your dentist will examine and prepare the tooth requiring a crown. They will usually provide you with a temporary crown at this first visit. During the second visit, you’ll get your permanent crown, which is created to match the fit and color of the relevant tooth.

When getting your permanent dental crown, you’ll be provided with a local anesthetic to numb the area. You’ll feel no pain as the crown is cemented in place, but afterward, you might experience increased sensitivity. This is because the nerves of the tooth were likely impacted and possibly exposed by the process. The degree of sensitivity varies from one person to the next.

Ask whether there was evidence of decay prior to the crown and, if so, how close to the pulp—which contains nerves—this decay appeared. Also, ask yourself whether you tend to experience sensitive teeth when exposed to hot, cold, or sweet items. It’s better to be safe than sorry by avoiding these triggers until you’re fully healed.

Some sensitivity is expected after getting dental crowns and isn’t a cause for concern. If you notice an increased sensitivity for more than a week afterward, however, speak with your dentist. They can take a look to make sure everything is in order and also recommend products—like specialty toothpaste for sensitive teeth—to help.
