As temperatures drop, one of the nicest things to do is to come home to a warm, cozy house. However, if you notice that your furnace isn’t working like it should, is it time to replace it? Some issues with your heating and cooling system just require a quick fix, but there are a few warning signs that indicate it’s time to kiss your old system goodbye.

Value & Age

A good rule some heating and cooling experts follow is the three-quarters/one-third rule: If your furnace is three-quarters of the way through its lifespan or it will cost one-third of its total value to fix it, it’s better to replace it. This is because any repairs you make to an old system won’t increase its life span in the long run. In addition, if you’re going to be paying over one-third of its value to fix it, you can pay a bit more to invest in a replacement that will last you much longer and may even decrease your energy bills.

Energy Efficiency

furnaceYou can think of replacing your furnace like replacing your vehicle; you may be more inclined to replace one that guzzles gas than one that gets a great mpg. If your heat pump is racking up your monthly bills, you may save more money long term by switching to a more energy efficient model.

Frequent Repairs

If you notice that you have to call your electric contractor every year or so for a new repair, it may be better to replace your whole furnace. Even if your system hasn’t reached its life expectancy, poor installation or faulty parts may be causing your issues. Talk to your heating and cooling specialists, especially if your furnace is still under warranty.
