Our local franchise here in St. Augustine has been working around the clock to help the residents in the nation’s oldest city in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Initially, the majority of our concerns focused on remediating flood damage to homes and businesses in St. Johns County. Our focus has now shifted, and we are starting to see mold growth in buildings that were not properly remediated.

A lot of people believe that mold can be killed by applying bleach to the visible areas that are affected. We wanted to offer a few facts about mold that may not be common knowledge.

  • Mold spores can’t be eliminated by treating with bleach!

  • Bleach is 90% water, which hydrates mold spores, contributing to growth.

  • Clorox Bleach Company, The Environmental protection Agency, and OSHA have all released statements saying that bleach does NOT kill mold.

  • 30 days after bleach is exposed to oxygen (open bottles of bleach), the chemical loses up to 50% of its ability to disinfect

  • Bleach is corrosive when combined with other cleaning products. This can seriously damage your property!

  • Mold claims through insurance are capped at $11,000 (with a $1,000 deductible). This means you need to act fast if you see mold, as damage spreads quickly and can exceed $11,000!

  • Mold requires negative air pressure to kill the spores. Building containments to restrict airflow is the most reliable way to eliminate growth.
