Before your backhoe contractor can begin using earth moving equipment, they’ll need to verify what underground utilities lie on your property. This often includes gas, power, or water lines. Knowing which areas to avoid will minimize the chances of you hitting or rupturing a pipeline, a situation that could result in significant damage and danger. Professionals get a picture of what they’re dealing with through GPR technology, or ground penetrating radar. When doing so, they have to be mindful of a few conditions that could compromise their readings.

Factors That Influence GPR Readings for Underground Utilities

1. Soil

Moisture plays a significant role in GPR readings. Material like clay and silt, which hold a lot of water, can be tough to scan for an accurate reading. The soil will need to be tested to see exactly what you’re working with before proceeding.

2. Weather

Because moisture affects GPR readings, a big storm can also impact your underground utility location process. Moisture effectively raises the conductivity of the ground, so once the radar touches the moist area, the reading will come back skewed.

3. Surface Area

underground utilitiesRough terrain can make it difficult for the GPR to get a close reading, as the machinery is usually more than 2 or 3 inches away when used on flat land alone. Other obstructions, like bushes and trees, can get in the way of the measuring tool.

4. Frequency

The radar frequency must be high in tight, shallow areas. On the other hand, areas that are wide or deep must be monitored using a lower frequency. The strongest antenna can scan up to 9 feet underground.

5. Conductivity

While most underground utilities are quite conductive, others, like PVC piping or plastic, have no conductivity, making it difficult for the GPR to pick up a signal for them.
