During the summer, an in-ground pool is a welcome addition to any home, offering a place for almost endless hours of enjoyment. However, it also needs regular upkeep, especially in the offseason. To ensure your pool stays in good condition and will require less work when you reopen it next year, perform a few tasks of fall maintenance.

5 Offseason Maintenance Tips for an In-Ground Pool

1. Add an Algaecide

Before you close your pool, add an algaecide to the water to prevent the organisms from growing in it while it’s covered. After adding the biocide, let the pump run for 24 hours to ensure it circulates throughout the system, then turn off the pump until you are ready to use your pool again.

2. Clear Leaves From the Area

When leaves accumulate near your pool, they can get in the water and clog the filter. Be diligent about raking and removing foliage from your pool area to prevent contamination and damage.

3. Check the Pool Chemistry

Inground poolAs the temperature falls, you can check the pH and chlorine levels of your pool less often. However, you should test the chemistry of the water at least once a week to ensure the pH is in the 7.2–7.6 range and the alkalinity is 120–150 parts per million. You also must verify the calcium hardness of the in-ground pool is 200–250 parts per million.

4. Install & Secure a Pool Cover

Install a cover to protect your in-ground pool from outdoor debris and stray animals. After attaching it, ensure the water blocks or bags are secured and all safety components are in place.

5. Inspect the Pool Cover

Check your pool cover regularly for debris accumulation and tears in the fabric. Use a hose to clear leaves and twigs off the tarp or install a leaf cover to prevent detritus from collecting on it.
