The frigid temperatures and snowy weather of winter are quickly approaching, and that means now is the perfect time to make sure your vehicle is prepared for the season. Taking some simple auto maintenance steps during the fall will minimize the risk of performance issues and breakdowns on icy roads.

How to Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter

1. Check the Battery

Cold weather can impact a car battery’s performance—and freezing conditions can reduce its efficiency dramatically. Having your vehicle’s battery checked by auto maintenance professionals will determine whether it’s up to the challenge of the oncoming winter or if a replacement is needed. Even a healthy battery can seize in frigid temperatures, so keep a pair of jumper cables in your vehicle at all times.

2. Examine the Tires

Worn-out tires can’t handle slippery roads, which may lead to dangerous skidding and spinning. Check the pressure and tread depth to determine whether you need new tires this winter. Use a pressure gauge and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to establish how much air is in the tires and adjust the pressure as needed. To test the tread, insert a penny into the groove with Lincoln pointing down toward the tire. If you can see the president’s entire head, it’s time for a tire replacement.

3. Adjust the Coolant Levels

auto maintenance Anchorage AKSubzero temperatures can make driving and maintaining a vehicle difficult. Antifreeze keeps the engine from turning into an ice cube during the winter, so it’s important to have enough fluid. Have a mechanic check the coolant, a solution made of one part antifreeze and one part distilled water, to ensure the levels are sufficient.

4. Change the Windshield Wipers & Fluid

As windshield wipers age, they begin to crack and lose their effectiveness. If you haven’t replaced these parts in a year, then install a new pair. It’s also important to check the wiper fluid—some products that are effective during the spring and summer can’t handle winter conditions. Make sure your fluid is designed for colder temperatures, so it won’t freeze on the windshield.
