Before electricity began to be distributed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, homes and businesses relied on gas lamps for indoor lighting. Today, gas lamps — or gaslights — are primarily used in areas with frequent blackouts, by campers, and those interested in reducing energy usage. Gas lamps provide users with an efficient and reliable source of light which can last for hours, provided there is enough fuel. Unfortunately, because of the limited popularity of these lamps, many people do not know how they work.

Here’s What You Need to Know About Gas Lamps

Internal Components

Gaslights have three main components — the tank, generator, and mantle. The tank holds the fuel for the lamp, along with a pump which is responsible for maintaining the pressure that pushes the fuel into the generator. The generator is the mechanism which preheats and mixes the fuel with the air, creating the perfect temperature and environment for the lamp to be lit. Finally, the mantle contains ash which allows the flame from the lamp to better distribute, creating a wide light rather than a small, hot flame.

How They Work Together

lampsWhen a gas lamp is lit, the oil in the tank begins to heat and pump upwards toward the generator. In the generator, the fuel is broken up and distributed, making it easier to light, all the while heating the air and fuel to the ideal temperature. Once the right conditions are in place, the screen at the mouth of the generator pushes the fuel and air upwards, allowing for the mantle to be lit. After the lamp is lit, a small knob on the side of the gaslight allows for the amount of flame — and thus strength of the light — to be controlled.
