Breast Cancer Awareness: Advice from a Women’s Health Center

Importance of Regular Screenings

According to the American Cancer Society, all women from ages 45 to 54 should schedule a mammogram at least once a year. By age 40, women with a higher risk of breast cancer may opt for regular screenings. By age 55, some women may reduce the frequency of mammograms to every other year.

If you’re not sure how to conduct a self-breast exam, talk to your doctor about inspecting for lumps, dents, and other changes. In addition to this routine checkup, you should also visit your gynecologist once a year for a breast exam and pap test.

Questions for Your Local Gynecologist

If you haven’t already visited your local women’s health center this year, now is the time. Ask your gynecologist about your unique risk of breast cancer, as well as when you should begin mammogram screenings. If you notice any abnormal developments in your breasts, always visit your doctor as soon as possible.

Education, awareness, and regular doctor’s visits are essential to the prevention of breast cancer-related fatalities. By detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages, women have the greatest chance of a successful treatment. For women with stage 0 or stage 1 breast cancer, the survival rate is nearly 100%. For those with stage 2 breast cancer, the survival rate is about 93%. By stage 4, the survival rate drops to 22%.
