You naturally want the best for your parents or other elderly loved ones. If an older family member can no longer live on his or her own without risk of injury or related problems, a nursing home might be the answer. Help yourself find the best possible nursing home for your loved one that provides outstanding care and the peace of mind you need.

Inspect the Food

Observe food being prepared at the nursing care facility. Does it look appetizing? The look and taste of food are just as important as its nutritional value in a nursing home, as residents can have trouble chewing, no longer enjoy strong senses of taste and smell, or have other conditions and issues that affect the appetite. You will also need to discuss any dietary restrictions your loved one has and how the nursing care center will accommodate them.

Watch the Staff

If you can, ask several team members how they feel about the staffing situation—do they feel there are not enough people working there? An understaffed facility usually means at least a few residents will be neglected, which is not what you want.

Ask About Activities

Look at how the residents spend their time and ask the staff what activities go on every day. Find out if there are crafting activities, light exercise programs, planned day trips, and other things that keep residents happy and active. A nursing home with the residents shut in their rooms is never a good sign. Even if the people living there are simply watching a favorite show together, they are still enjoying quality time instead of spending the day alone.
