October 2017 Newsletter

This month’s session on October 17 will kick off our mini short course series to provide a little continuing education for the beef industry. Each session will really drill down into the details and provide information that a producer can take home and put into practice. There will be guest speakers to handle the individual sessions and a meal will be included as part of the evening. Clifton Livestock will run several sets of calves into the sale ring and talk about the differences in price and value.

Time to Wean Calves

A good weaning program has several important features that will make it successful. Following are the goals of an effective program. We are always glad to help as you plan your program!

#1  Reduce Stress! Provide a clean, safe weaning trap so that the calf is comfortable and can get over missing its mother and the milk and grass that were so familiar.

#2  Fight Potential Disease Challenge! Give calves the correct vaccines and de-worm to eliminate internal parasites. We will cover the vaccines at our October 17 session.

#3  Help Develop Immunity! Giving the correct vaccines and getting calves on the right feed program will build immunity and protect against future problems. Healthy calves always grow better.

#4  Socially Adjust! Calves need a good environment to go from a nursing calf with their mother to a young adult in a group of other like cattle. Grouping similar weight calves together helps this.

#5  Learn to Eat and Gain Weight! Getting calves to eat feed quickly has so many benefits. Purina offers two of the best starting products available in the industry in Pre Con Starter and AR Starter. Feed either product according to our recommendations and calves will gain valuable body weight during the weaning period. This is so important, especially for good replacement heifers.
