Driveways, roads, parking lots, and other surfaces are sometimes made from asphalt. This material can crack from certain causes, despite its durability. That’s when the paving contractors with Caddo Construction in Anchorage, AK, step in to fix the problem. Here, they explain what you need to know about asphalt cracking.

What Are the Causes of Asphalt Cracking?

asphaltAsphalt cracking occurs for a variety of reasons. For example, extreme temperature changes can expand and contract the road to the point it cracks. Continuous rain and snow can also lead to damage, and, in the cold Alaska winters, cracks can be worsened by the constant traffic of snow plows.

How Does It Work?

Asphalt crack filling can be completed with either a hot or cold rubberized solution. Professional paving contractors tend to use the hot pour for better results, but the process is very similar. First the crack is prepared by removing any debris; otherwise, the filler will not hold.

Then, it’s time to prepare the hot pour by melting the solution in a kettle; cold pour comes in a ready-to-go format. The compound is poured into the crack and leveled with a brush for an even finish with the existing pavement. The hot asphalt filler will only take a half-hour to cure, while the cold pour will take at least four hours. If the filler settles and there is additional space in the crack, a second coating may be required.

Why Is It Important?

Proactive crack filling is extremely important in maintaining the integrity of asphalt surfaces. Exposed cracks allow water to penetrate the surface, which can cause damage to the asphalt itself or the ground beneath. Moisture eats away until the cracks grow into larger spider-web patterns or develop potholes that are dangerous for drivers.

As you can see, asphalt crack filling is a special process that protects driveways, roads, and parking lots.
