People sometimes use the words “porch” and “deck” interchangeably. However, they’re actually two different things, albeit with many similarities that make this an understandable mistake. If you’re going to talk to a contractor about building one, though, you’ll have a much easier time communicating what you want if you know the difference.

Decks

The main difference between decks and porches is that decks are not covered by a roof overhang. You can obviously put up an awning or gazebo for rain cover, but decks do not entail that a home’s overhanging architecture be significantly altered.

Other defining features include the ways decks can be attached to homes: usually resting on ledgers or support walls. They’re typically bigger than porches and can include many entertainment features, such as dining areas, game tables, and even swimming pools.

Porches

deckUnlike decks, porches are more connected to a home and are usually protected by a roof overhang. Porches may also feature partial walls, and some of them can be enclosed by glass or screens, like sunrooms and solariums.

They’re usually smaller than decks and aren’t often used for entertainment. That is, they’re better suited to create a welcoming environment and provide a convenient place to wipe feet and hang keys. At the same time, of course, it’s also not unheard of to sit on a porch swing with a good book or friendly company. Porches can be in the front or rear of a house.
