I recently went to a local production called Decades Rewind with some friends. As we sat there laughing as memories of the 80’s were steaming on the screens behind the performers I felt inspired that having an 80’s theme party. How much fun would it be to dress up in the 80’s, listen to 80’s music, and just enjoy stepping back in time for a couple of hours. Here are some ideas to make your 80’s Paint Party a success.

But What Will I Wear?

The 80’s were so much fun and dressing up in clothes from that era can be fun, there is no limits to how creative you can be. Want to wear a giant bow in your hair or be a rocker? The choice is totally up to you! Just grab some neon colored anything and go wild!

In the 80’s we tending to wear big tops on top of smaller bottoms. Grab an oversized sweatshirt and cut out the neckline to make it bigger and can hang off the shoulder to give more of an 80’s look. Wear a tank top or sports bra underneath, preferably in a bright color.

Shoulder pads were very popular in women’s clothing. The bigger the shoulder pads, the better. If you do not have a shirt with shoulder pads, try stuffing your shirt with some kind of padding.

Another approach is to go for more of an 80s punk look, which would involve mostly black and denim.

  • Wear at least two different denims. Men typically wore denim pants with denim jackets. Women wore denim miniskirts with a denim jacket. Men and women typically wore a tight shirt underneath the denim jacket.
  • Combine denim and lace. A classic 80s look is a lace top paired with denim acid-wash jeans or a denim miniskirt. The contrast of drastically different materials is a key feature of 80s style.
