Discover the Fascinating History of Dental Implants, Texarkana, Arkansas

Dental implants are a viable alternative for teeth that are missing or damaged. At the office of Randall A. Ellis, DDS, they use the latest technology to place implants for their patients in Texarkana, AR, successfully. The procedure has seen a wealth of improvements over the years, some of which the expert staff expands on below.

The Early History of Dental Implants

Humans searched for solutions to missing teeth as far back as 2500 BC. But the first population to utilize implants successfully were the Mayans in 600 AD. At the time, they used shells to replace teeth inside the jawbone. Around 800 AD, the Honduran culture curated durable stone models.

In 1809, J. Maggiolo inserted a gold implant into a fresh extraction site and added a crown after. Silver capsules, corrugated porcelain, and iridium tubes were also used as implant materials in Europe at the time.

Dental Implants in the 20th Century

dental implantsThe Strock brothers, doctors Alvin and Moses, are credited to have first placed an implant inside the bone. Manlio Formiggini, known as the father of modern implantology, first developed a spiral stainless-steel design in the 1940s that allowed the bone to grow into the metal. The following years saw a great range of research and discovery in this area of study. Doctors and researchers created more streamlined methods and learned to place the implant where the bone had the greatest strength and thickness, further optimizing the structure of the implant itself.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that Dr. Hilt Tatum introduced the first implant made of titanium alloy, which is similar to the material used today. Further inventions by the end of the 20th century included coatings and the manufacturing of machined implants.
