One of the best ways you can protect your dog's health is giving them a complete set of pet vaccinations. Just like humans, dogs are vulnerable to a wide range of illnesses, and vaccines help prevent some of the most serious. While many vaccinations are optional, all dogs should have the following three early in life, with regular boosters as needed to maintain protection.

3 Essential Pet Vaccinations for Your Dog

1. DHLPP

The DHLPP shot is a combination vaccine which protects against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. These illnesses are highly contagious, and puppies are especially vulnerable, which is why this is one of the first shots your dog should receive from your veterinarian. Most vets recommend yearly boosters throughout your dog's adult life.

Pet Vaccinations2. Rabies

Not only can rabies harm your dog, but it is also transmittable to humans and other animals! Rabies prevention is an important issue for pet care and public safety, and is often regulated by local governments. Hamilton County requires all dogs and cats three months of age or older to be vaccinated against the disease, with regular boosters. As an owner, you need to keep documentation on hand to prove your dog's rabies shots are up to date.

3. Bordatella

Bordatella bacteria are responsible for “kennel cough,” a contagious infection which affects the lining of your dog's throat. While this is not the most severe illness on the list, it is common. Get the vaccination if you plan to have your dog around other dogs. Furthermore, if you're going to board your dog at a kennel, this vaccination will likely be required.

By getting your dog fully vaccinated, you ensure your furry friend will stay in top shape for years to come. Check with your veterinarian today to see whether your dog needs a booster.
