3 Tips to Prevent Gum Disease

1. Brushing & Flossing

dental care

The most beneficial way to clear bacteria from your teeth is with a routine of brushing, flossing, and water-piking your teeth daily. When the offending bacteria are removed, they cannot to form a thick layer of plaque (soft debris which attaches to the pellicle). If left unchecked that plaque can be mineralized and is referred to as tartar or calculus. That mineralization gives the bacteria a stronghold onto your teeth. As this spreads, your gums advance through a disease process which begins as gingivitis, advancing to Early Chronic Generalize Periodontitis, to Moderate Chronic Generalize Periodontitis, to Advanced Chronic Generalize Periodontitis.

By now brushing and flossing is probably looking pretty simple to prevent this often non-reversible, silent disease. An you are so right! The old saying of “only brush and floss the teeth you want to keep!” is really pretty valid.  Your efforts for keeping those dangerous bacteria away and clearing existing plaque buildup are very essential.

2. Rinse Your Mouth

Despite brushing and flossing, some bacteria will remain in your mouth. This is most common between teeth, along the gum line, and in hard-to-reach areas. The best way to further clean your mouth is to rinse after brushing and flossing, either with mouthwash or warm water.

3. Reduce Risk Factors

Diet is an important consideration for preventing Periodontal Disease. Foods with protein and vitamin C are as essential for your mouth as the rest of your body. Milk is critical for your bones.

Sugar is destructive to your mouth in every possible way. The mouth is always in a state of destruction or a state of repair depending upon what we consume. Avoiding those sugars and starches, any drinks acid or with sugar are supporting lower acid levels which supports destruction.
